US to ask Modi govt to turn ideals of tolerance into reality

Washington, Oct 15 (PTI): A top American envoy on religious freedom has said the US will encourage the Modi government to turn the ideals of "tolerance and civility" into reality across the country, days after the Prime Minister called for communal harmony in the backdrop of the Dadri lynching incident.

"Just after this controversy over beef incidents, the Prime Minister called for civility and tolerance between the different communities. We are going to encourage the Prime Minister and the government to take those ideals and turn them into reality all across the country," US Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom, David Saperstein, told PTI.

Saperstein was responding to a question on the status of religious freedom in India after the State Department released its annual Congressional mandated report on International Religious Freedom for the year 2014.

The India section of the report, which includes the UPA rule till May 26, says that in 2014, India witnessed religiously motivated killings, arrests, riots and coerced religious conversions and the police in some cases failed to respond effectively to communal violence.

"We do not make evaluations, we just present the facts. I would say we would let the report speak for itself," Saperstein said when specifically asked about religious freedom under the Modi government.

However, the top American diplomat on international religious freedom referred to the Siri Fort speech made by the US President Barack Obama on the importance of religious freedom and tolerance when he was in New Delhi in January.

"President of United States when he was there spoke very forcefully about the need to avoid seeing the country splintered along the religious lines," Saperstein said adding that for the well-being of the country those problems need to be addressed.

"We continue to push with the Indian government to take steps to ameliorate the conditions that lead to violence and to take steps where every community which is in minority and vulnerable in certain areas that they would have protection," the American diplomat said.

Against the backdrop of the Dadri lynching incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had last week pitched for communal harmony and brotherhood in the country, saying Hindus and Muslims should work together to fight the common enemy of poverty.

A big slap on the face to the govt.
Who will come and MAKE IN INDIA when jungle raj is going on.If these big western companies come and set up in india, the western employees will obviously want to follow their culture and food but here our culture protectors will beat them up like dadri.
There is a clip of our PM refusing to wear a skullcap when he was presented one. That says a lot about his 'tolerance'.He never refused various other head gears in other states.
The present govt. has come to power largely due to massive support from north india and central india.these are the places where people are easily fooled by some people if they can give good speeches.
Time to split south india from the rest of the country.all the nonsense in the country like rape, honour killing, khap panchayat is north indian culture.why should india get tarnished by these people.south india is the IT hub and the most educated and progressive part of india.
south indian cities are the cleanest in recent surveys.north indian cities are the dirtiest.dirty minds live in dirty places.
how ironic that these people who are from these unclean cities preach us about Swachh Bharat.

Modi, mind you India needs US, U.S can do away without India. You are running to the U.S. every now and then for business and defence and security matters and presenting yourself like a very enterprising person and persuading them as if India has very conducive atmosphere for investment, whereas the reality is exactly opposite. To attract investors and business to flourish peaceful atmosphere is the fundamental requirement. This is just the tip of the iceberg, Wake up and walk the talk.

Swamiji: Simply, this is the tip of the iceberg. Both Modiji and Arun Jaitley are very eager to land in the U.S. to attract U.S. investment flowing to India by the billions but if India is taking an attitude " you bring your money here to invest, but don't interfere with our violation of human rights and our detour to the theocracy", that will not work.

Since BJP came into power, hundreds of NGOs lost their funding from the U.S. The State Department knows that, also the U.S. Ambassador to India has given an indirect warning already.

You need seperate law, because u dont want to follow Indian law. But while point comes to rights, you need same right as a person who follow Indian law. if you think all are same in India why you dont follow Indian law?
Y a particular religion have seperate law?
Y a particular religion have more excuses from Indian law.
If you consider you are an INDIAN, no need to shout and tell. Just follow only Indian law.

I hope Bihari Voters understand this horrible condition and vote against the party which is supporting hoarders and black marketeers of Pulses. It is these black marketeers of Pulses who have financed Amit shah for this Bihar election.

After Modi came to power the prices of Pulses have gone up 300%. Still they manipulate figures and show that inflation is down by 4%. In this govt every thing is Fake & Facade. Since Beef is banned in Maharashtra majority of the Beef eaters have now turned towards Pulses like Tur Daal to meet their protein requirements. Hence the consumption of Daal has gone up sharply and resulted in shortage and black marketing. Hence this price rise by three fold after BJP came to power. Pulses are the staple food of poor people and now poor people of India have become poorer due to sharp rise in Daal prices. Bihar voters should keep this in mind while voting in next phase.
