Damascus, Oct 13 (IANS): The Russian embassy in the Syrian capital on Tuesday came under mortar fire by rebel militant groups, the media reported.
The mortar shells landed when supporters gathered at the embassy to welcome Moscow's military intervention in Syria, an eyewitness told Xinhua news agency.
The first mortar hit the rooftop of the embassy while the second landed in the embassy's yard, said the source on condition of anonymity, adding that there was no information on possible casualties yet.
"When we heard the sound, some of us fled while others stayed," said the witness. "The attack triggered a stampede of people wanting to leave."
Russia has repeatedly emphasised that it supports Syria in its fight against the militant Islamic State group, adding that Moscow's main goal was fighting terrorism.
Government forces have launched an offensive against rebel positions with support of Russian air power.
