Tennis legend McEnroe to play in Mexico


Mexico City, Oct 2 (IANS): American tennis Hall of Famer John McEnroe and five other former greats, including Pete Sampras, will play in an ATP Champions Tour event in the northern Mexican city of Monterrey later this month.

McEnroe's countryman, 14-time Grand Slam champion Sampras, will also take part in the Monterrey Open from Oct. 27-29, as will Sweden's Mats Wilander and Thomas Enqvist, French Henri Leconte and Austrian Thomas Muster, Efe reported.

An ATP Challenger tournament is also scheduled for that same week in Monterrey, the organisers said on Thursday.

Sampras, who will play either Enqvist or Muster in his first match, and McEnroe, who will take on either seven-time Grand Slam champion Wilander or Leconte, both received byes to the semi-finals.

The 56-year-old McEnroe, winner of 77 singles events in his career, including three Wimbledon and four US Open titles, is the oldest player in the tournament, while the 41-year-old Enqvist is the youngest.
