Thank you Jessy Rodrigues for the excellent pictures of the bird sanctuary . As students studying at Mysore, Ranganatittu was the closest affordable picnic spot for us. It brought back fond memories. For further benefit of daijiworld.com readers, Ranganatittu is an outstanding bird sanctuary in Karnataka . It is located at down stream Krishnanarajasagar reservoir in Kaveri river basin.

It comprises of five islands, strewn with a large number of boulders. In addition to permanent residents, a large number of migratory birds visit the sanctuary in different seasons of the year. They court, mate, build nests, lay eggs, incubate and enlarge their families here. It is amazing to note that some of the migratory birds return to the same nest the following year. Spoonbills (Platalea leucordia), from Antarctica migrate here for breeding.

Often Bill Storks (Anastomus oscitans) from North America arrive in winter. The adult Painted Storks (Mycteria leucephalia) are orange colored and their young ones are of dull ash are the visitors from Siberia. White Ibis (Threskiornia aethiopica) is a regular guest from Nigeria. These birds migrate from across continents and distant lands.

They come in peace and return in peace. They do not have boundaries. They need no visas and no government can stop them. I wish mankind follows suit and make our global village a wonderful place to live in. Naveen Frank Dubai
