Gentleman's game gets ugly: Bermuda's Jason Anderson handed life ban

Bermuda, Sep 22 (Agencies) : A Bermuda batsman almost knocked the head off the opposition wicket keeper's shoulder with his bat. The two men were exchanging physical blows.

One of island nation's domestic matches, the final between Cleveland County Cricket Club and Willow Cuts Cricket Club at St David's Cricket Club ground in Bermuda, witnessed the ugliest on-field brawl.

Cleveland's wicketkeeper Jason Anderson punched the batsman George O' Brien without any apparent reason. The altercation turned into an ugly brawl when the O'Brien responded with an attempt to hit the keeper's head with the bat.

The support staff had to enter the field and even the cops were present in the middle to calm things down.
The Bermuda Cricket Board found Anderson guilty of a Level 4 Breach of the Code of Conduct and handed him a life ban. O'Brien, who charged of a Level 3 Breach was handed 6-month ban.

Wicket keeper Anderson has played nine List-A games for Bermuda and five Twenty20 games.

Cleveland County skipper Allan Douglas said he was not able to figure out the reason for the brawl.

"I think a little bit of frustration built up by Jason, dropping a catch and missing a stumping, but I don't know what was said between George and Jason because I was at the other end of the wicket (bowling)," Douglas was quoted as saying Royal Gazette.

The Bermuda Cricket Board reacted to the incident by saying, "We condemn this act without reservation and support the Bermuda Police Service, the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control as well as the Willow Cuts and Cleveland County Clubs as they seek to end this irrational behavior on our sporting grounds and community."

Why only Cricket is called Gentleman's game? Does it mean that other games are of brute?
In fact except Boxing all other games are Gentleman's games. Especially all Team games are Gentleman's games. By calling only Cricket as Gentleman's game we are just insulting all other games like football Basket Ball Hockey Tennis as if they are the games of barbarians. Actually all over the world Football and Basket Ball are ten times more popular than Cricket. Only nine Countries play cricket, out of which four countries are of Indian sub-continent viz: India, Pak, Bangala & Srilanka. We can very well call Cricket as Lazy man's game, because here players as well as spectators have slow & lazy behavior.

Cricket used to be the game played by nobility. Today the nobility have all but disappeared. The game remains, the moniker remains and the cricketers have become the new nobility.

Great reflexes by the Wicket keeper saved him from major head injury. Should be having some boxing experience like skipping the punches.
