Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (GA)

Udupi, Jul 9: Many traders have opposed district administration's decision to change the weekly market day at Santhekatte near Kallianpur here from Sunday to Wednesday.  Taking the lead of the protest is dry fish vendors and vegetable vendors.

Even the customers have demanded that it is not righ to change the weekly market all-of-a-sudden since it had been in practice for many years.  Moreover, some have even suggested that weekly market could be held on two days in a week, just like Adi Udupi.

A little scene was created at Santhekatte on Sunday July 8 morning after dry fish vendors and seashell vendors demanded that deputy commissioner should come to the place and solve their problem.  They added that, it would be difficult for them to continue with their business if the market is shifted to Adi Udupi from Santhekatte.  "Since there is no place for us in the APMC yard, we will have to sit in the near by fish market.  This however, will not benefit us but we will have to incur loss," they lamented.

Deputy commissioner Ponnuraj who later arrived on the spot said that the new system will be observed by the administration for two weeks and a final decision will be taken later.  Since the weekly market at Santhekatte used cause traffic disruption to Sunday traffic, it was decided to shift it to Wednesday.

Gokuldas Nayak, Captain Swami, circle inspector Vishwanath Pandit were also present on the spot.
