Former Liverpool star Riise joins Delhi Dynamos

New Delhi, Aug 25 (IANS): Delhi Dynamos FC added to the galaxy of former superstars plying their trade in the Indian Super League (ISL) with the signing of Liverpool legend John Arne Riise on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old, one of the best left-backs to don the Liverpool jersey, won the first division league in Cyprus last season with APOEL Nicosia. He became a free agent at the end of the season after his contract with APOEL was terminated by mutual consent.

Riise made 234 appearances for Liverpool during his seven year stint at Anfield. He won an FA Cup, a League Cup and the 2005 Champions League while playing for the Merseyside club.

The fullback had joined Liverpool from Monaco in 2001 and scored on his debut as the Reds beat Bayern Munich 3-2 to win the European Super Cup.

Delhi Dynamos announced Riise's signing ahead of the English Premier League (EPL) clash between Arsenal FC and Liverpool FC at the Emirates Stadium in London. Liverpool legend Ian Rush personally handed Riise the Delhi jersey.

"I am super excited to have joined Dehli Dynamos. I am a person who loves a new challenge, to see and experience different cultures. Roberto Carlos has been one of my heroes growing up as a left back," Riise was quoted as saying in release.

"I'm honoured to have him as a coach, and can't wait to give my all for him and the team. I'm thankful for this opportunity and look forward to start training, meet the other players and staff. See you soon Dynamos supporters."

Marquee player and Delhi Dynamos manager Roberto Carlos said,"Riise is a great player, very experienced and a true leader on the field. He is definitely going to help on the development and evolution of the team in the competition."

Riise will join fellow Champion’s league winners Carlos and Florent Malouda for their pre-season camp in Sweden.
