Chinese President Xi meets OCA chief

Beijing, Aug 22 (IANS): Chinese President Xi Jinping met Sheik Ahmad al-Fahad al-Sabah, the president of Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) and Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) here on Saturday.

Xi praised the contribution of ANOC and OCA to the development of Chinese sports as well as to world peace and development, Xinhua reported.

Beijing, which staged the Summer Olympic Games in 2008, was awarded the right to host the 2022 Winter Games at the 128th session of the International Olympic Committee on July 31.

Xi noted that the 2022 Winter Games will contribute to China's progress in many fields such as sport and economy, as well as the development of the Olympic movement.

Hangzhou, the capital city of east China's Zhejiang Province, launched a bid on Monday to host the 2022 Asian Games. The OCA will choose the host city in September.

Xi said the Chinese government fully supports Hangzhou's bid, adding that he believes in the city's capability.

Sheik Ahmad congratulated Xi on Beijing's successful bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics, saying the OCA is willing to work closely with China to ensure the success of the Games.
