Corinthians move to top of Brazil's Serie A


Rio de Janeiro, Aug 14 (IANS): Gremio scored before and after the halftime to defeat Atletico Mineiro 2-0 in Brazil's Serie A championship.

Thursday's result saw Corinthians leapfrog Atletico to occupy the first place in the standings while Gremio are third, four points behind the leaders, reported Xinhua news agency.

Douglas opened the scoring in the 41st minute before Luan doubled the visitors' lead 10 minutes after the restart of the football match at the Mineirao stadium.

Meanwhile, Joinville defeated defending champions Cruzeiro 3-0 with goals to Bruno Aguiar, Marcelinho Paraiba and Mariano Tripodi.

Joinville rose to 17th in the standings and Cruzeiro slipped to 14th, one match shy of the season's midway point.

In Thursday's only other fixture, Ponte Preta won 2-0 at home over Avai.
