Shivani, Sajan disappoint at swimming Worlds


Kazan (Russia), Aug 8 (IANS): Indian swimmers Shivani and Sajan Prakash disappointed at the World Championships as they failed to advance in their respective categories at the Kazan Arena here on Saturday.

In the women's 50 metres freestyle event, Shivani finished 67th out of 119 participants out of which four did not start the race while two were disqualified. The 18-year-old failed to qualify for the semi-finals as she clocked 27.65, finishing 3.25 seconds behind top qualifier Australian Cate Campbell. The top-16 qualified for the semis.

Later in the day, Sajan Prakash failed to qualify for the men's 1,500m freestyle final as he finished 35th out of 48 participants out of which three swimmers did not start. Only the top-8 reached the summit clash on Sunday.

The 21-year-old Kerala swimmer completed the race in 15 minutes and 45.29 seconds, finishing 54.25 seconds behind top qualifier Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy.

Earlier on Friday, Virdhawal Khade failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the men's 50m freestyle event but ended an impressive 38th in the heats out of 120 participants. Five swimmers did not start the race while two were disqualified.

The 23-year-old Khade impressed with a timing of 23.01 seconds, finishing only 1.3 seconds behind top qualifier Florent Manaudou of France. The top-16 qualified for the semis.
