Karkala, May 25: Nakre Lawrence Castelino (90), the former member of Kukkundoor gram panchayat and former board member of St Lawrence Shrine at Attur near here passed away here on Thursday May 24 after a brief period of illness.

He was one of the well-respected persons of the area.  During his tenure as member of gram panchayat for almost 2 decades, he had played a majore role in sanctioning houses to poor and neglected.  Along with that he had strived a lot to construct roads in the rural areas and connect them to the town.

His service to St Lawrence Church at Attur would always be remembered by all.  He was the member of the St Lawrence Church board for many years. Later when Nakre Church was established, he rendered his services as the first vice-president of parish council.  He was also the head of the ward (gurkar) and was known as 'gurkaram' by all.

One of his sons Fr Baltazar Castelino had served the poor and neglected people of Madgascar for almost 20 years.  He is rendering his pastoral services in Paris, France at present.

His family is a family of teachers, one can say.  While son Nakre George Castelino is a state-level award winning teacher, his daughter-in-law is a teacher.  Lawrence's another daughter-in-law who is settled in Mumbai is a national award winning teacher.  One of his sons is a advocate in Mumbai High Court.

He is survived by 3 sons and 4 daughters and their families.

His mortals remains will be laid to rest at Nakre at 4 pm on Saturday May 26.
