The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting with MLAs of Dakshina Kannada and representatives of trade bodies affiliated to the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in Bangalore on Thursday May 17.

G G Mohandasa Prabhu, president of the Old Bunder Wholesale Kirana and Allied Merchants' Association, Mangalore, who attended the meeting, told The Hindu that the minister agreed to declare Bunder area as the main market yard as earlier.

Minister for Fisheries, Endowment and Dakshina Kannada district in charge B Nagaraj Shetty; MLAs N Yogish Bhat, Padmanabha Kottari, S Angara and Shakuntala Shetty; and president of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Sushma Janardhan also participated in the meeting.

According to the notification issued on April 27, the main market yard in the Bunder area will cease to exist. The notification declared the Baikampady market sub-yard, which was a schedule "B" market, as the main market yard (schedule "A"). Traders dealing with 113 types of agriculture produce will not be allowed to do business in the Bunder area.

In the meeting, the minister said that the opinions expressed by the elected representatives of the district were not in favour of de-notification.

Hence, traders in the Bunder area would be allowed to continue their business there, he said.

Main market yard status will be restored to the Bunder area.
