Mangalore, May 17: Archana V, PhD scholar in department of Statistics of Mangalore University was awarded prestigious Jan Tinbergen award for the year – 2007 in recognition of her research work in statistics.

This award instituted in the name of Jan Tinbergen, one of the great Nobel laureates in economics, is given to the young statisticians once in two years by the international statistical institute during the biannual conference of the institute.

The award includes a cash prize of 2,269 Euros (approximately Rs 1,25,000) and a travel grant for her visit to Lisbon to participate and present her paper titled ‘Improved Estimators of Coefficient of Variation in Finite Population’ at the 56th session of the international statistical institute which is to be held in August 2007 at Lisbon in Portugal.

After Kavitha Bhat, Archana is the second scholar to get this award. Kavitha Bhat bagged the same award during 2006. Both the research scholars are doing their doctoral under the guidance of Dr K Aruna Rao, professor of statistics in the Mangalore University.

Archana V is the daughter of B Vasudeva Bhat and Shashikala V Bhat of Hosabettu and wife of Venkatesh Anandan of Padubidri.

She graduated from Govinda Dasa College at Suratkal with a gold medal for securing the highest marks in Mangalore University BSc (PMS) examinations in 2003. Archana obtained second rank in MSc (Statistics) and also bagged Prof B R Bhat cash prize for securing highest marks in probability theory.

Archana is currently working as a lecturer in statistics at the SMSG Jain College of Indiranagar in Bangalore.
