Udupi: A Tale of Broken Legs ‘n’ Hearts Meant-for-each-other

Udupi, May 5: Let no one asunder that which God hath joined together...goes a saying.

His marriage was fixed, invitations distributed to near and dear ones. Only three days were remaining for realizing his long-cherished dream. But he did not know that there was something else in store for him.  Just when everything was perfectly set for the marriage, he was kidnapped, taken to a distant forest and was assaulted. His legs were broken and his dreams almost shattered.  Yet he did not give up but married the love of his life on the same day and at the same time as it was decided earlier.

The Story seems to be too filmy. Isn’t it?  But this is the truth. Lokesh (23) was in love with his neighbour Sarita (22) for quite a sometime now.  Both were the residents of Nejar near Kallianpur here and they hailed from the same community. Lokesh was employed in a private firm. So there were no social or legal barriers whatsoever for their marriage.

But Lokesh's family had problems and certain issues. They did not agree for their marriage as they did not want Sarita to be their daughter-in-law.  But Lokesh was firm in his decision and he prepared for their marriage at his own despite opposition from his parents and sister. Marriage was fixed for Wednesday May 2 at an auspicious muhurtam at 11.15 am at Shree Mahalingeshwara Temple at Bannanje.

However, on Sunday April 29 a group of four unidentified men entered his house forcibly, took him out on a Maruti Omni car to the woods at Perampally and assaulted him with iron rods. Both his legs were fractured and he could not walk.  There was no one to help him. He immediately knew that this was done in order to stop him from marrying Sarita. But he did not give in.  He rolled himself with great pain to the road since his could not walk. A rickshaw driver brought him to Santhekatte and his friends admitted him to the district government hospital.

Lokesh immediately filed a complaint that his own family members had planned the assault to prevent him from getting married.  However, he wanted to make his family members know that nothing and no one could stop him from entering wedlock with Sarita on the set day and his buddies came for his help.

Despite all these efforts by his own family members to stop him from marrying, he married Sarita on Wednesday May 2 as decided.  His friends carried him to the hospital with bandage on his both legs for fractured limbs. He could not perform any marriage ritual. But nothing and no one could stop him from entering wedlock with Sarita.  Despite pain all over his body, he had the bliss of marrying his love and even keeping up of his promise.

If things were right he would have come to the Temple on marriage procession from his house, but here he was brought by his friends from hospital. He could not even perform any ritual such as taking the seven rounds to yajna kunda before tying knot with Sarita.  Moreover after the marriage he should have taken Sarita to his house, but he had to be admitted back in hospital.  While Sarita did all the rituals, Lokesh sat on the chair and even exchanged garland while sitting.

But finally love conquered everything.  At last it was not hatred but love that prevailed and it was perfect example to the above saying that no one can separate two hearts that God joins together for eternity.
