Kohima, May 29 (IANS): An Assam Rifles soldier was injured after a group of suspected militants ambushed a convoy of the security forces, which was moving from Nagaland capital city of Kohima to nearby Jakhama on Friday morning.
An Assam Rifles spokesman confirmed the incident and said the ambush took place around 10 a.m. and they suspect NSCN faction led by its chairman S.S. Khaplang being behind the incident.
The condition of the injured jawan ws, however, stated to be alright, the spokesman said.
Khaplang faction of the Naga militants abrogated from the ceasefire agreement with the central government in March this year and has been attacking the security forces in Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
The ambush took place two days after Union Minister of state for Home Kiren Rijiju visited the state and reviewed the ongoing operations against the NSCN faction, particularly in areas bordering Myanmar.
It may be mentioned here that the NSCN (K) cadres had attacked an Assam Rifles convoy in Mon district of Nagaland earlier this month (May 3) and killed eight personnel of the forces and injured five others.
After the withdrawal from the ceasefire pact, the NSCN (K) and several other outfits of the region including the anti-talk Ulfa faction led by Paresh Baruah, anti-talk faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) led by I.K. Songbijit and several others from Manipur have formed a joint front christened United National Liberation Front of West South East Asia (UNLFW).
Following the attack on security forces in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, the Assam Rifles and other security agencies had also launched a joint operation against the militants.
The Central government had recently clarified that they have the report about coming together of the militant outfits but it would not cause any security threat to the country.
However, several sections feel that the unification move of the northeastern militants will lead to further unrest and law and order problems in the region, which had been witnessing peace of late.
