Rajiv Gandhi remembered in Tamil Nadu


Chennai, May 21 (IANS): The Tamil Nadu unit of the Congress party on Thursday paid floral tributes here to late party leader Rajiv Gandhi.

The president of the state Congress E.V.K.S. Elangovan and senior leaders paid floral tributes to a portrait of Rajiv Gandhi at the party headquarters here.

The leaders also garlanded Rajiv Gandhi's statue here.

At Rajiv Gandhi's memorial in Sriperumbudur, around 50 km from here, party leaders paid floral tributes and also received the Rajiv Yatra Torch.

Rajiv Gandhi, who was prime minister from 1984 to 1989, was blown up by a woman suicide bomber of the erstwhile Tamil Tigers from Sri Lanka at an election rally at Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, on May 21, 1991.
