Phnom Penh, May 19 (IANS): A Cambodian court has convicted two foreign nationals of counterfeiting at least $5,000 worth of Indian currency in 2013, media reported on Tuesday.

Phnom Penh Municipal Court's presiding judge Keo Mony said British tourist Muhamed Suhaei, 51, was sentenced to eight years in prison on charges of circulating fake foreign currency while Bangladeshi national Azad Abul Kalam, 32, was given six years as an accomplice to the same charge, reported The Phnom Penh Post.

A police official said the pair was arrested on December 4, 2013, after carrying an amount of Rs.99,500 (about $1,500) in fake Indian currency notes to a money exchange shop located in Prampi Makara district.

"They were arrested based on the complaint of the money exchange shop owner after they sold Indian Rs.99,500 in exchange for $850 from the victim," the official said.

He added that after their arrests, police found them to be in possession of over Rs.300,000 (about $4,700) in fake Indian currency notes.
