My visit to China will set 'new milestone' for Asia: PM

New Delhi, May 13 (PTI): Faced with irritants like the boundary issue and China's plans for infrastructure projects in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), Prime Minister Narendra Modi will have a tough task as he meets the Chinese leadership during his three-day visit to China from tomorrow which he hoped will set a "new milestone" for Asia.

Modi, who is undertaking his first visit to China as Prime Minister, will reach the ancient city of Xi'an, the home town of President Xi Jinping, for a summit meeting, an unusual departure from normal protocol and seen as a reciprocal gesture by the Chinese leader who was hosted by Modi in Ahmedabad when he visited India in September last year.

"I am looking forward to the trip to China... the 21st century belongs to Asia," the Prime Minister told Chinese media ahead of his visit.

The Prime Minister, who spoke in Hindi, hoped that his visit will "further deepen" India-China relations and set a "new milestone" for Asia and developing countries."I believe that my trip to China will not only deepen the China-India friendship, but also set a new milestone for the relations between developing countries in Asia as well as around the world. There is no doubt about that," he told state-run CCTV ahead of this visit.

He said India and China have made great progress in bilateral relations in recent years and managed their differences with patience and maturity.

"Interacted with the Chinese media, where I highlighted the strong potential of India-China ties," Modi tweeted.

"I talked about our shared responsibility to help developing nations, especially in poverty eradication," he added.

In another tweet, he said, "Asia, being the land of Buddha has the responsibility to ensure that this is a century free from war."

Modi noted that he had met President Xi three times during the last one year and held extensive talks on a wide range of issues.

This is first time since Xi took over power two years ago that he will be receiving a foreign leader outside Beijing and will spend considerable time informally interacting with Modi.

The only other leader Xi has spent time walking around was with Barack Obama last year during APEC summit when he took the US President around Zhongnanhai, the imperial garden in Beijing where the top Chinese leadership resides.

But the list of problems both countries face are considerable, ranging from the festering border dispute to China's support for India's arch-rival Pakistan.

President Xi had during his visit to Pakistan on April 20 announced a USD 46 billion package ato construct infrastructure including highways and hydel power projects along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor through PoK to the Gwadar port in Balochistan.

New Delhi has lodged a protest with Beijing over the China-Pakistan economic corridor.

Serious differences continue to prevail on the border issue even as both sides are making efforts to ensure that peace and tranquillity prevails.

China is not keen on the clarification of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) proposed by Modi last year during the Chinese President's visit.

The clarification of LAC ahead of the resolution of the boundary was expected to restrict aggressive patrolling from both sides.

Two incursions by the Chinese troops in the Ladakh area during Premier Li Keqiang and Xi's visits to India in the last two years overshadowed the trips.

The incidents prompted Modi to suggest to Xi last year that clarification of LAC would greatly contribute in efforts to maintain peace and tranquillity of the border where troops from both sides often jostle to assert their claims and counter claims.

The issue was also discussed during the 18th round of the border talks held in March this year.

China says the border dispute is confined only to 2,000 km mostly in Arunachal Pradesh whereas India asserts that the dispute covered the western side of the border spanning to about 4,000 km, especially the Aksai Chin area annexed by China in the 1962 war.

Besides having restricted talks with Modi, in his native Xi'an city, Xi would take him on a tour of the iconic Wild Goose Pagoda built in 6th century AD in recognition of monk Xuan Zang's contribution in popularising Buddhism.

The visit to the spiritual structure assumes significance as Xuan undertook a journey to India in 645 AD through the ancient Silk Road and returned home after a 17-year-long sojourn with precious Buddhist scriptures.

Modi would also be given a traditional Chinese imperial Tang dynasty welcome before the two leaders settle for a banquet.

In all, the two leaders are expected to have threadbare discussions on the border issue, China's push for Maritime Silk Road (MSR) project over which India has reservations and India's big push for Chinese investments which will not happen without the nod from Beijing.

China has already announced USD 40 billion fund for the silk road projects.
From Xi'an, Modi will fly to Beijing where he will hold extensive talks with Premier Li Keqiang on the entire gamut of bilateral ties.

"A full range of political issues would be discussed - bilateral ties, regional issues, multilateral issues. Not just political matters but economic issues will also come up, issues relating to trade, investment to our collaboration on infrastructure projects, and I think a broader set of people-to-people contact-related issues," Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar said on the eve of the visit.

Both sides will sign an agreement to bolster trade, investment and other diverse areas.

Mr. Peter: Mr. Modi is landing in China at a very critical time for China. The Chinese economy is terribly slowing down, the Banks are in debt and in serious trouble already due to the uncollected loans by the billions. The Chinese export is declining every day due to the poor demand overseas. And to stimulate the economy, the banks are trying to loan money at a very lower interest rate. Now, whether the Chinese business community or the Government will take any extra effort to invest in India creating more unemployment in China? If China is slowing down like this, if the U.S. has to pay back over 1 trillion dollar U.S.bonds held by the Chinese upon their demand, the U.S. Government would be caught up in serious trouble.

You are correct. if the Pilot pen or Sony CD player is made in Japan, that will last for a very long time but the same products made in China have far less life and durability.

One German car which was 1995 model, I drove over 285000 miles without any serious mechanical troubles, all the parts were made in Germany. But, the 1999 model same brand, after driving over 150000 miles, problems were started. When the defective plastic parts were checked, they were made in China. Even many of the big international brand names, many parts are from China to save money for the company, but the durability would be far less than anticipated.

What magic you are asking us to believe?
You will sell our economy to Chinese RMB,that is all going to happen.
They will come and invest and export from India and remit the profits to China.
I think the general public is bored of this so called Modi Wave and fever virus.
In the past, our PM’s made overseas trips and did business talk and lot of companies invested in India even though we never had direct investment policies. The previous governments had so many limitations when they faced business delegates overseas and in India.
None of the PM’s made such big Noise as the present PM is creating news.I think there is a huge battery of highly qualified technical people who are hired to spread the news and highlight what the present government is planning to do.
Every time we hear about something new but nothing materialized. Right from clean India or Public toilets to Good Roads,we have not seen any city that is talking about new toilets made or any clean place created.
Just take the example of Mumbai,I visited the airport, andheri and eastern high way and nothing new, same dirty roads, same people sit on road side and same filthy public toilets.
At least start changing the cities where BJP is running the states so that we start believing in you.

Do you think that he has some magical power to change the course of India as he has promised through his political sermons?

He is the Prime Minister of India, he is an accomplished politician with an insatiable thirst for controlling power, and he thinks that he can change the minds of the foreign leaders through his charming talk. On the other hand, in the cat and mouse strategy of his mindset, he is very good at watching the danger signals affecting his personality.

Hello Mr. Prime minister, forget about Asia where you have compete with China, Japan and Korea, just concentrate on India for now and try to make that "new milestone" that you're talking about in India first. I am sure this will be the only achievement of our PM for the people of India since 1 year. The present BJP government has created many "New Milestones" - U turn in Aadhar, U Turn in FDI, U Turn in Land Bill, U Turn of Black money return and so on. By the time the PM has completed 5 years in 2019 he will finish travelling the nook and corner of this world which will be the greatest achievement of his government. He have forgotten how chinese being buddhist targetted their own tibetian brothers or else dalai lama wouldnt have been in India...
These people are now showing soft corner on communist nation coz they targetted muslims aka turkish muslims of Xinjiang coz they have seperate identity compared to mandarin muslims...Mandarin muslims are rarely targetted coz they speak similar language and have similar culture but follow Islam ...Chinese has a hustory of targetting people of minorities be it tibetian buddhist or xinjiang muslim just to dominate mandarin speaking Han chinese policy in these region coz these are not original land of china......Recently a new survey showed that these once buddhist nation has become a christian majority nation and have lost their buddhist background....and churches too are targetted there...it is not secret...Cantonese once a dominant language in south eastern china has also been targetted coz it is not mandarin...Vellano may find it why it happened ...
Communist china is nothing but domination of Han chinese and their philosophy...they may use any tool to target their minorities..
Now dont cry foul if they target your own people ...they can do anything ..have patience till then...religion cant be takenout by targetting but incontrast it willl make u much more stronger

Yes, as Modi's isolation of Pak is underway, Chinese are flowing billions at POK towards infrastructure and as if to salt the wounds, they claim Pak China bilateral relations are higher than Himalayas, deeper than ocean and sweeter than honey
And as you continue to hope for 'declining US', the world has been witnessing an ever inclining $. Modi's smooth talking dramatics might have fetched him a landslide victory on domestic front mainly due to media hype and lack of apt leadership in the opposition, but while dealing with China it takes real talent and dramatics have little or no impact.

One more point, just take an example of China how they are trying to control population explosion. Where as in India, some insane preachers advise to have 10 children in every Hindu house hold.
No correlation between economic development and population growth and unemployment. Mr. Modi should pay some attention to such senseless talk by idiotic people.

@ Modiji don't forget the fact that China come up to this level after 3 decades of continuous heavy development and also not letting anyone corrupt the system by uting the laws of the country properly.

On the other hand, India with its current ways of development, and the religious intolerance that become more prominent recently, the recent acquittal of criminals that makes a mockery of the judiciary.

At this rate, how can you bring India to the level of China in this century?

For anything to be materialized we need to give an attempt/try at the first instance. We should not find reason to believe that Mr. Modi is a man of non-action. He is capable. In the meantime he must strike a balance between ruling India and caring for the minorities cause also. That trust is more important than any other relations. Minorities need to be assured that Secularism prevails. So many incidents take place, when some organizations talk against minority religion and some vandalism at the places of worship. Such incidents should be condemned with strongest words as per constitutional rights.
BJP government has another four years to work out and bring promised change.
I am not anti congress or anti BJP.I am pro-India's economic development peaceful communal co-existence.

Modi thinks everything will be set on right track once India/China/Pakistan leaders meet and shake hands. What cooks behind the back is any ones guess.
I hope Modi's efforts will result in improving the strained relations with neighboring countries. It’s positive step in maintaining peace. Where there is peace & good understanding, there should not be a war. Let us hope for the best.

Just keep one thing in mind! the words of vivekananda... there is a cycle of chaturvarna in geo politics too!... first it was Brahmin ( knowledge) youga of INDIA... then came Kshatriya (military) of british kingdom, then came VAISHYA (businessmen from America), and next will be SHOODRA (worker class of china)... this has got nothing to do with caste and religion.. basic varna system or the WORK chosen! ... once this cycle complete, India shall dominate again...! that is how the world is!...
but one important thing, is for all this there is a LINK with INDIA!.. british too chose INDIA to do rule, business and loot!... America to chose INDIA as major IT and service partner, when they needed it to exapand... Now, china too needs India's help in either their market or comeptition!... the next decade belongs to EAST and ASIA>.. there should be good realtion with china, healthy and competitive one!.. china was nothing some 20 years ago, just a mere fishing pond many places, where they have built, Industrial corridors! US is in the decline... Ajit Kumar our rep in UN, yesterday, raised major issue of "racism, human rights within American border and asked them to give attention to those thing, than thinking beyond their boundaries"... massive step!... Trust in Modi!... he has to isolate Pak first , from world scene... chinese dont care about religions as seen last week.. they will go after pak too, if their purpose is served!

However, it will take time to normalize stressed out relations.
Consisting faith building exercise and work is necessary.
Our leaders must teach their followers how to win friends and influence people.
