Wolfsburg's women lift the German Cup 2015

Berlin, May 2 (IANS): Wolfsburg cruised past league rivals Potsdam 3-0 thanks to Martina Mueller's brace in the German Cup final, at Rhein-Energie-Stadium in Cologne

Wolfsburg's women's team on Friday showed the men's team how to win the German Cup as the "Wolves" downed Turbine Potsdam with one first, and two second-half goals, to snatch the second German Cup after 2013, Xinhua reported.

Wolfsburg dictated the proceedings on the pitch from the start to break the deadlock against Potsdam with just 13 minutes into the game. Potsdam's defence failed to clear a long ball by Wolfsburg's Nilla Fischer allowing veteran striker Martina Mueller to round goalkeeper Anna Felicitas Sarholz for the opener.

As the game progressed Potsdam gained a foothold into the game yet Wolfsburg were able to take their neat advantage into the break.

After the restart Wolfsburg nearly doubled the lead but Potsdam keeper Sarholz was on guard to deny Verena Faisst. Nonetheless, Wolfsburg made it 2-0 on the scoreboards as Mueller made use of a foul play penalty at the 61st minute.

Potsdam tried to respond but their offence lacked in penetration against Wolfsburg's well-positioned defence. Thus, the "Wolves" made the game safe nine minutes later when Alexandra Popp tripled the lead with 20 minutes remaining.

With the German Cup triumph, Wolfsburg women reaped their overall sixth title in two years.

They still have the chance to sew up the domestic double this season, as they lead the Bundesliga standings with one point, followed by Bayern Munich and Potsdam with one round to be played.
