Six feared dead in Jammu and Kashmir road accident


Jammu, April 25 (IANS): Six people were feared dead in a road accident on the Jammu-Srinagar highway in Ramban district of Jammu region on Saturday.

"A Tata Sumo taxi went out of the driver's control at Mehad (Ramban) on the Jammu-Srinagar highway and plunged into the roaring Chenab River this morning," a police official told IANS in winter capital Jammu.

"A rescue operation was launched immediately. Six passengers have been rescued so far, but six are still missing," he said.

"Efforts to locate the missing passengers are on. It is feared that they may have been washed away by the current of the River," the official added.

He, however, denied to confirm the deaths of the missing passengers unless their bodies were recovered.

Most of the passengers of the ill-fated vehicle were labourers.
