Mangalore, Feb 23: Himatlal R Vasant (68), senior photographer, proprietor of Novelty Studio and partner of Pro Lab in the city, passed away on Wednesday, Feb 21 after a brief illness.

He is survived by wife Marie (nee D'Mello), son Gulshan Roy (well-known architect and designer), daughter Reema, daughter-in-law Sunita and grand-daughter Simran Saloni.

The Vasant family had migrated from Gujarat and settled in Mangalore about a century ago and had assimilated into the Mangalorean mainstream.

Himatlal was a founder-member of the South Kanara Photographers' Association and was an active member of several organizations.

Photography is a hobby or a profession, but to Himatlal R Vasant it was life itself. He was rightfully called the "King of Photography World". He was the pioneer in video shooting in the early 1980's. Be it an engagement or a wedding, always in popular demand was Himat with a video camera. He did it with a passion, and one could see it in his work.

He was fondly and commonly addressed as "Bavoji" (brother-in-law) by most members of the Mangalorean community who knew him.
