Mangalore, Feb 6: Senior Congress leader and Ullal MLA U T Fareed (69) passed away in hospital after a prolonged period of illness on Tuesday February 6 morning.

U T Fareed, a four-time MLA from Ullal had been admitted to a private hospital on January 1 after he fell sick.  He was operated for blood clot in the brain and bleeding in the intestine.  Though he recovered a few days later, he situation turned grim again a couple of days ago.

At the time of death he was in the ICU in Omega Hospital here and was put on ventilator support.

Fareed had won the assembly elections for the first time in 1972 as a Congress candidate.  Prior to that he was the vice-president of INTUC and KPYC (youth Congress).  He was again elected MLA in 1978 before winning the same seat in 1999 and 2004. 

Other than being MLA he has had the experience of heading various boards and corporations such as LIDKAR (Karnataka State Leather Corporation), director of Karnataka State Apex Bank, SCDCC Bank, member of Hajj committee.

He is also the founder joint secretary Masjidun Noor.  He was also the chairman of Naseema Fareed Memorial Charitable Trust, NMA Academy Bangalore.  He had played a major role in setting up Mangalore University in Ullal constituency.

He is survived by 5 children (4 boys and 1 daughter).  While two of his sons U T Mohammad Ali Imtiaz and U T Iftikar Ali are doctors by profession, his second son U T Khader is a member of KPCC.  His last son U T Zulfikar Ali is the managing trustee of Naseema Fareed Institute of Health Science. His daughter Zeenath is married to Dr Yunus Saleem, an orthopaedician.
