Udupi, Jan 20: The prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda Winston Baldwin Spencer acknowledged India’s place in the world of education and termed the country as a knowledge superpower.

Speaking at the convocation ceremony of Manipal University at Manipal Greens here on Friday January 19, he said that in terms of number of students studying in the colleges, universities and research centres, India’s higher education and research sector was the third largest in the world.

He informed that Antigua and Barbuda had already twinned with Manipal University in the area of medicinal science and expressed his will to extend collaboration in other branches of professional education.

He also spoke about his interest in cricket and the importance of education in life and well-being of the society.

Spencer was accompanied by the American University of Antigua, College of Medicine president Dr Neal Simon and its Academic Support dean Dr Majid Pathan, along with government of Antigua and Barbuda director of communications Maurice Merchant and military officer Lt Uriah Sheppard.

Among those present were Wellcome Trust chairman William Castell, Manipal University chancellor Dr Ramdas Pai, pro-chancellor Dr H S Ballal, vice-chancellor Dr Rajashekharan Warrier and others.
