After Obama's shots, NYT asks Modi to break his 'dangerous silence'

By Arun Kumar

Washington, Feb 7 (IANS): As President Barack Obama's comments that religious intolerance in India would have shocked Mahatma Gandhi raised a storm in India, the New York Times asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to break his "deafening silence."

Mahatma Gandhi's legacy is an inspiration for the US too, said the White House, while a bipartisan commission praised the president for his "timely comments" and the State Department said it encouraged all governments around the world to respect religious freedom.

"What will it take for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak out about the mounting violence against India's religious minorities?" asked the New York Times Saturday in an editorial titled "Modi's Dangerous Silence"

"Attacks at Christian places of worship have prompted no response from the man elected to represent and to protect all of India's citizens," said the influential daily. "Nor has he addressed the mass conversion to Hinduism of Christians and Muslims who have been coerced or promised money," it said.

"Modi's continued silence before such troubling intolerance increasingly gives the impression that he either cannot or does not wish to control the fringe elements of the Hindu nationalist right," the Times suggested.

Citing Obama's speech in New Delhi last month that "India will succeed so long as it is not splintered along the lines of religious faith," it said "Modi needs to break his deafening silence on religious intolerance."

The bipartisan US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) commended Obama for deepening relations with India while also recognizing religious freedom concerns during his India trip and at National Prayer Breakfast Thursday.

"President Obama's timely comments underscore the importance of India getting religious freedom right," said USCIRF Chair Katrina Lantos Swett. "This is a challenge that India must and can address, given its diversity and long history of democratic values," she said noting Obama's "concerns come at a time of increasing abuses against India's minority religious communities."

Since 2009 USCIRF has designated India as a Tier 2 country, noting since 2014 increased communal and religiously-motivated attacks and slow and ineffective redress for victims of past incidents, leading to a culture of impunity.

Meanwhile, Mark Stroh, a White House spokesman, said "Mahatma Gandhi's legacy is one we look to for inspiration in dealing with intolerance in the United States and around the world."

Obama's message in India and at the National Prayer Breakfast was a universal one "that every nation is stronger when people of all faiths are free to practice their religion free of persecution and fear and discrimination," he said.

At the State Department, spokesperson Marie Harf declined to make an assessment of the situation of religious freedom in India specifically as she repeated Obama's universal message.

"So certainly, we encourage all governments around the world to respect and ensure freedom of assembly for individuals who are worshiping or who are doing so for religious reasons, and that's a universal right we think should be adhered to," she said.

Earlier this week, White House had refuted suggestions that Obama's last speech in New Delhi referring to the need for religious tolerance in India was a kind of a parting shot at Modi, who had been denied a US visa for a decade over his alleged inaction during 2002 Gujarat riots.

"I think that's been somewhat misconstrued, if you look at the context of the entire speech, it's really about inclusivity. It's about the power of diversity," Phil Reiner, White House's senior director for South Asian Affairs, told foreign media.

"I don't believe that this was a parting shot by any means. This was simply the President speaking to what makes us great democratic nations," he had said.

    M. Modi was flying around the world wearing his high priced foreign custom-made clothing to attract foreign investment to transform India as the manufacturing base replacing China but made a very serious blunder in not speaking about while the minorities, especially the Christians were terrorized by the street hooligans.

His deliberate delinquency will be questioned by the news media around the world and that is read by the politicians around the world.

The big writing on the wall after the Delhi election may alert him at last.

People Obama is right in saying intolerance in india which is seen towards within Hinduism high caste to low caste and the goes towards Christians where most of these people educate in Christianb schools and then attack them.it is like attacking your own mother. ModI will defeat himself in many ways by sickness or curse from God of doing bad things to peace lover who has dedicated thier life to uplift the poor mostly the priest nuns and many Christians suffering just because political agents of modI .when someone hurts the priest or nuns days are not too far for the curse to shower on those idiots. People it is a matter of time just keep praying and for giving all those attacked the churches. This life will pass but we are the winner because we love christ.

So far only Indians new Mauna Modi but now the whole world knows. What a shame? The entire BJP was pointing a finger at Dr Manmohan Singh - the most respected man for being silent. But Modi's silence is too dark and as I said, the world is taking a note of it. We should remember that we cannot run a country in isolation.

Time has proven Modi's capacity to deal with India's problems. He must have thought he can handle India the way handled Gujarat which was nothing but dictatorship. Poor fellow has got the shock of his life and his vocal chords are frozen. As long as he is aligned to VHP, RSS & BD, his vocal chords will remain frozen and the silence will be 100 times worse than what everyone said of Dr Manmohan in DW forum.

Mr. Sankar: If the PM of India has no concern and deliberately kept quite while repeated attacks were taking place at the minorities, that excuse is too hard for the people to understand. It was in the leading news papers what the Delhi police did against the peaceful Christian marchers to the Home Minister's home. Mishandling them to the police van and physical abuse to the religious hierarchy, can you justify that in the largest democracy of the world?

Was he elected to give a peaceful government to the citizens of India or simply to fly around the world giving impression to the electorate of India that Indian economy will be overtaking the U.S. and China combined, 20 trillion economy etc?

He is not an Economist, now the best Economists of the world are keeping quite in making economic predictions, but Mr. Modi's predictions are totally confusing.

Now his right hand man said very openly that the black money distribution of Rs. 15 lakh/person was an idiom so now the electorate can read the rest of the story very easily.

Ok they have not even mentioned muslims who have suffered in riots.

Indian society unlike west is not individualistic but a more cohesive unit of families and community. when conversion happen it divides families/communities horizontally and vertically which in turn creates suspicion and hatredness towards each other.

Individual freedom to chose religion and propagation of faith must be postponed for another 60 years till our society matures and understand this concept.

What i see is evangelisation lobby in hurry, without gains for anyone.

US foreign policy is not just about visits and courtesy. For a nation to conform to its policy, Human Rights, Secular ideas, and other similar related issues are part of the package which will finally decide the dotted line. The present government is failing to read the minds of the American policy makers. Chai, Dinners are just part of the routine. Many countries have failed to meet the expectations of the American mind set and are in trouble with sanctions and other diplomatic issues.

Our political parties are playing majority-minority game to create religious intolerance. All our political parties are communal with all of them supporting conversion of either minority or majority. If a party is secular then it would support conversion of both. This is cheap trick for divide and rule. Attacks on church, mosque, temples are highly unforgivable. Most minorities do live in fear, Government need to protect their rights, freedom to worship. Divide and rule strategy will never help to prosper our country, we need support of everyone for the development.

"India with equal treatment" good to hear... and the reality is far different.
    1. Caste Discrimination is found eery where.
    2. women are treated in low caliber
    3. Bajrangis are threatening the lowers.

    where is the equal treatment?.

In US most of the high post are given to Indians, women are in high post.

In India BJP vowed to change it during elections manifesto...
But there are no changes.... still the same old rape cases... Bribery... etc..

Earlier PM was Maun Mohan Singh.
Present one is Nara "illada" Modi..

Obama must reserve his dialogues to his country and not to interfere in our affairs. Once he met Modi he realised Modi is a tough nut to crack and can not be armtwisted as per his whims. Plus Obama is fast approaching the end of his tenure. so he is raking up unconcerned issues. Let him first put his house in order and then comment on other countries. Does he by any chance think the same about Pakistan where the religious minorities(hindus) are treated worse than animals.

@ Shubha. Kudla.. I do not think Obama is interfering in India's affair. India so far has respect in International community for its secular and democratic value which is in threat now under Modi. By the way, how do you know Modi has tough nuts.. did you meet his wife or you checked yourself??

    Ramesh,

Yes, US does have problem but is not on religious lines. Racism is different issue. Forget religion when it comes to racism india is really up there at number one spot.

You are just ignoring the fact that india has such problem. But i have to say is that Indian devide on religion is due to politics.

Nobody cares for the nations that are unfair.
Is anybody from India think of settling in Saudi Pak, Afghan, Iraq etc? No! But US,Europe, Australia, UAE etc.Yes why?
For any good country turning bad, it is a genuine concern to all.
Bilateral trade, NPT, embargo etc. are decided on the basis of policies of a country!

At this speed, it appears that all Investment promises will be like kite flying only.... very much liked the ball dance between the leaders.... modi is giving opportunity to his voters to complete the ghar vapasi programme as early as POOSIBLE.

Now the work of increasing the speed on Chennai/ Mysore railway route is back in the book self, as the cost is very very huge, since the whole new track has to be laid , Even the speed track can not have turns/bends/curves of even 5 degree.

Obama is true but its nothing to do with BJP or Modi. This is even penetrated across many offical places and deep rooted offices in the name of Religion, Region and sects. Even making lists and jobs in the name of same by some wasted interests who wants to create intollerance amongest citizens and sell arms.
