Namibian minister faces sexual assault charges

Windhoek, Feb 6 (IANS): A Namibian cabinet minister is facing arrest after a 51-year-old woman accused him of sexual assault, media reported Friday.

Uahekua Herunga, minister of environment and tourism, allegedly raped the woman inside her Windhoek home last September, Xinhua news agency reported.

He is also accused of offering the woman 100,000 Namibian dollars (about $8,850) in an effort to buy her silence.

The minister denied the charges.

By Friday, no arrest has been made as the police sought to get direction from the country's prosecutor general.

Namibian Police Chief Inspector-General Sebastian Ndeitunga confirmed to the country's media that the minister was under police investigation for sexual assault.

Ndeitunga said the case was complicated as both the minister and the woman have made counter charges against each other.
