The formal election is scheduled to be held on January 17. According to the backward classes 'A' criterion, Sushma and Shayana Jayanand of Uppinangady qualify to hold the post.

However, since most part of Dk district has been represented by BJP MLAs, odds are very much in favour of Sushma, because her area is represented by Congress MLA U T Fareed. This is analysed as a strategy to win over Ullal's voters.

Eleven months out of the 20-month tenure of the ZP presidentship witnessed Mamata S Gatti of Congress at the helm, with the help of JDS, which was given the deputy's post.

With the change of political equations at the state level, the JDS-BJP combine decided to have the same coalition at the district level as well.

A no-confidence motion was moved against Mamata Gatti on December 30, leaving her with no option than resign.
