Dozen Nepal lawmakers injured in clash over statute

Kathmandu, Jan 20 (IANS): Over a dozen Constituent Assembly members, including senior leaders, were injured Tuesday when opposition members attacked lawmakers of the ruling parties over issues concerning the new statute and disrupted the proceedings.

Lawmakers from the opposition parties led by Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist) (UCPN-Maoist) vandalized the Nepal Constituent Assembly and attacked the lawmakers of ruling parties during the sitting Tuesday morning.

A self-imposed deadline set for Jan 22 over the promulgation of the new constitution is approaching after repeated failure to reach a consensus over the intricacies of the new statute.
