Listen to women more, Don't be macho, Pope tells men

MANILA, PHILIPPINES, Jan 18 (Agencies): Pope Francis said on Sunday men should listen to women's ideas more and not be male chauvinists.

The Argentine pope made impromptu remarks during a youth rally at a co-ed Catholic university in the Philippine capital, Manila, after he noted that four of the five people who addressed him on stage were male.

"There is only a small representation of females here, too little," he said, bringing laughter from the crowd.

"Women have much to tell us in today's society. At times we men are too 'machista'," he said, using the Spanish term for male chauvinists.

"(We) don't allow room for women but women are capable of seeing things with a different angle from us, with a different eye. Women are able to pose questions that we men are not able to understand," he said to more applause.

He noted that it was a 12-year-old girl, not any of the four men, who had posed the toughest question, asking why God allowed children to be abandoned.

He ended that part of his impromptu remarks with a joke: "So, when the next pope comes to Manila, let's please have more women among you."

Francis has said that, while the Roman Catholic Church's ban on women priests is definitive, he wants to appoint more nuns and other women to senior positions in the Vatican.

    Dear Joseph:
Here you see, you have already judged police report being bull. You are expecting drunkards to be logical and decide on which religious place to attack after being drunk. You may think, Police report might be bull. The fact was 3 people were arrested and the fact was not mentioned in the local media. I was only asking why? Names of the people were also mentioned in the arrest and were guys who belong to Sikh community with no apparent connections to any religious outfits. So I stand by my view that as long as we are not discerning, our faith and emotion will be misused by vested interests.

    Alex,

Its not slandering. Telling people what they believe is not true is not slandering. Pointing out ridiculous beliefs is not slandering. pointing out the sheer hypocrisy in those belief is not slandering. No one forced religious people to go and read the books. if they get offended dont watch or read.

Free speech should be absolute. There is no if`s, but`s and no dancing around the bush with this subject. free speech that does not offend is not a free speech. it cant be a free speech. You would`nt watch Christopher hitchens, Richard Dawkinks, Sam Harris and their ilk because what they say is offensive any religious person. To say that such great minds that they have to shut their mouths because it offends belief is nonsense.

It is rightly said by Pope, one should not slander or make fun of other religion.
What is said, is double edged sword equally holding good for others as well.
Well it is wrong to slander one religion, which holds good that religion not to slander others.
Rightly so, Hindu, christian and budhist religion is slandered left and right, in middle easter countries.
The rule should apply to all, not just for one religion.

It means exactly what it reads as. Christ is the head of man because he is God and all humans are subject to Christ. God created man and woman and they have specific roles within their relationship in marriage and how they conduct themselves in society where their relationship is based on LOVE. The relationship must never be based on lust, pride, greed, sloth, envy, gluttony, envy. Why? Because humans are created in the image of God and we have to imitate our creator i.e. God who has revealed himself as the Holy Trinity i.e. the three persons (God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit) who exist in an eternal relationship based on LOVE.

Zeitgeist, your question is understandable since you deny the existence of God. You are an intelligent chap and I assume you believe in the existence of gravity. Let me ask you - Have you seen gravity? or have you seen the result of gravity? So how do you conclude gravity exists if you have not seen it?

Zeitgeist, I do not fight science. In fact, God has given us reason and intelligence to understand his creation and to enjoy the wonderful gift of life while loving our neighbour as we love God. Science is not opposed to Christianity, to think otherwise is myth.

    Zeitgeist,
Good question. Good debating point. I for one dont know the reasons for that but I sure do hope there is a good explanation.
Catholicism is not the only religion where this happens. In some other major religions too I know that women have a secondary role. It is not to say that women are sidelined but they are not given the main role when it comes to administration and in the performing of some of the religious services and rituals.

However, being a Christian I do not wish to discuss this matter in a manner as to ridicule the Church but as a faithful I only seek knowledge on this matter to be better informed.

Mr.Zeitgeist you seems to be a person with half knowledge, only uttering first part of the answer given by pope, say the second part also, "killing the name of religion is also wrong" he also said we have have to respect freedom of speech. Remember that Pope has a responsibility for one billion Catholics and he cannot say something which may send religious fanatics on killing spree, already savagery by ISIS is going on in Syria and IRAQ, Nigeria and Niger. In Delhi already 2 churches attached what else you want?

While I completely disagree with views of Zeitgeist, why have you included Delhi church burning what is happening in Syria, Niger or elsewhere. Culprits of Delhi case were a few drunkards taking up some late night challenge. No religious motives were attributed. Unfortunately, the new of culprits getting caught was never published in daijiworld or any local media. Not sure why ? As long as we don't discern the reasons, there will always be people playing with our faith and emotions.

    Dear Michael, Mangalore,
I quote yours: Culprits of Delhi case were a few drunkards taking up some late night challenge. No religious motives were attributed. Unfortunately, the new of culprits getting caught was never published in daijiworld or any local media. Not sure why ? As long as we don't discern the reasons, there will always be people playing with our faith and emotions. Unquote.

As far as my knowledge goes no drunkard will throw the stone to a church, to a temple or to a Mosque instead he will at least bow down and ask for His grace.

A drunkard can throw stones only when he was given him his desires drink and asked/advised him to throw stones to a church not otherwise.

Supposedly a drunkard throws a stone why only to a church?! Why not to a mosque or to a temple?!

The Police were asking the church authorities to repair the statue and to cover it with a glass without inquiries. When they were shown the CCTV they manipulated the report saying a drunkard.

    UTTER NONSENSE POLICE REPORT.

I know what he said but the other half what you mentioned does not matter to my argument about free speech. But now since you have already mentioned what the pope had said i will comment on that.

what pope did here was blame the victim. how is that different from blaming women who got raped if she was wearing say a mini skirt. the sentence would have gone like this- oh.. the women was wearing provocative/revealing clothing cloths and she was just inviting trouble. but the man should not have raped her. How does that sound???

This is the only time I have read a leader (political / religious / social), publicly say that women need to be listened to. They have one more angle of looking at things.
Cheers. If there have been other times and other people, cheers to them too.

Roman Catholic priests have to do full time duty, women have family to take care of. So being a priest is not important, but important roles in the church, are acknowledged.
