Mexico City, Jan 17 (IANS/EFE): A perpetrator of the Sep 26 abduction of 43 students in Mexico was arrested by the federal security forces, media reported.

The arrest was revealed by the Mexican attorney general's office Friday.

The suspect, Felipe Rodriguez, has been described as a "material author of the homicide in the Ayotzinapa case".

He was apprehended Thursday night in Jiutepec, a town in the central Mexican state of Morelos, sources with the federal police told Efe.

Scores of students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Normal School, a teacher's college, were travelling through the town of Iguala in Guerrero state, Sep 26, when they were assaulted by the police.

Six people were killed and 25 wounded, while 43 students were abducted.

The attorney general's office said in November that corrupt municipal authorities handed over the students to the Guerreros Unidos (United Warriors) drug cartel, which killed the students and incinerated their bodies.

Top Guerreros Unidos members arrested in late October confessed to the killings and implicated Rodriguez in the crime, the attorney general's office said.

Families of the students, however, are unwilling to accept the federal government's version of the events and are demanding to know why soldiers of the Iguala-based 27th Infantry Battalion, who witnessed the police attack Sep 26, did not intervene.

An analysis of the remains recovered from a river has found a DNA match with only one of the 43 students.
