Puttur, Dec 21: The death of notorious Atik alias Ravi alias Bullet Sudhir (32) in police encounter at Ottinene near Byndoor in Kundapur has once again proved that those who live by sword (bullet) die by sword (bullet).  It is not only the society that deserts them but even death leaves them at their own peril.

In Sudhir’s case even the church to which he belonged by Baptism deserted him.  He was denied a place of burial in the Nelyadi church cemetery.  With no other option, he was finally buried in a land owned by his grandmother.

He had friends around him throughout his life.  Whether it was in college, business or later even when he entered the world of criminals.  He had with him a group of friends who always stood by him.  But sad is that at his funeral there were only a few.  While 4 members of his family attended the funeral, there were more police personnel.

The church which denied Sudhir a burial place clearly stated that his father the late Alexander had not married in the church as per church norms.  However, his grandmother had succeeded in baptizing Sudhir along with his other siblings Sunil and Baby in the St Joseph Syro Malankara Church at Nelyadi.

Sudhir was born in Nelyadi to Philomena and the late Alexander couple.  He did his primary education in Nelyadi.  His teachers are of the opinion that he was never a bright student in studies.  But he was head and shoulders above others in other activities which had nothing to do with education.  Later during his college in Uppinangady, he was debarred owing to his unruly behaviour.

He learnt driving and joined Bethany institution as driver.  There too he did not survive for long.  Meanwhile he learnt karate which later became a pre-fix to his name.   He soon became Karate Sudhir.  During his stint as driver in MRPL in Mangalore, he was sent behind bars on theft charges.

After coming out from jail, he shifted his base to several places such as Kasargod, Mangalore.  He had a bunch of unruly youth who supported him.  He started wood business which subsequently landed him in jail.  He murdered his own friend Francis over a trivial financial amount of Rs 2,000.  He was sentenced to life imprisonment.  But managed to come out on parole citing illness of his mother.

During this period he along with his accomplices stopped a tourist car at Periyashanthi and looted the tourists.  However he was nabbed by police and as they were taking bringing him to jail from Mysore, he escaped at Hunsur.  Thereafter he was spotted as dead body on Tuesday.

In the meantime, his mother sold their house at Nelyadi a couple of years ago after her husband passed away.  At present she is working in Mysore as housemaid.  The police after encountering Sudhir had passed a message to her that he had been nabbed.  Accordingly, she started immediately and reached Nelyadi on Wednesday morning.  However, he was buried by then.  The mother finally did not even have an opportunity to have a glance at her son's face.

Sudhir was neither fanatic nor religious minded.  He worked for those who paid him.  He did everything for money and finally the same money ended his life too.
