Kundapur: Prime Accused in Sukhanand Shetty Murder Gunned Down

Kundapur, Dec 19: The special investigation team of police led by Pandeshwar police inspector Venkatesh Prasanna has gunned down the prime accused in the Sukhanand Shetty murder case in an encounter near Byndoor here in the early hours of Tuesday December 19.

Though the exact identity of the accused is not established, trusted sources said that it was notorious criminal Ashraf alias Bullet Sudhir who was shot down by police in the encounter.

The police had come to know about the involvement of Ashraf in the Sukhanand Shetty murder from other accused who are already in the police custody.  Accordingly, the police team led by Venkatesh Prasanna had gone to Bhatkal and arrested Ashraf.

They were returning from Bhatkal after arresting Ashraf when the latter asked the police to stop the vehicle to answer nature's call.  As soon as they alighted, Ashraf grabbed the revolver from police personnel of the team and tried to flee the place.  Despite repeated order by the police, he did not stop.

At this police Venkatesh Prasanna is said to have fired three rounds of bullets at him of which at least two pierced his body.  He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital.  However, he was declared brought dead by the doctors.

Though more details are yet to be gathered about Ashraf, sources said that he was wanted by police in a murder and robbery case other than some petty cases.
