Beijing submits bid to host 2022 Winter Olympics

Lausanne (Switzerland), Jan 6 (IANS): The Chinese Olympic Committee submitted its bid for Beijing to host the 2022 Winter Olympics to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at its headquarters here Tuesday.

China's submission came a day before the lapse of the deadline for cities to present their candidature files to the IOC. The committee president Liu Peng handed Beijing's guarantees to the IOC executive director for the Olympic Games Christophe Dubi, reports Xinhua.

Beijing will co-host the Games with Zhangjiakou, a Hebei province city nearly 200 kilometers northwest of Beijing, if it wins the 2022 bid. The ice sports of the Games will be staged in Beijing while snow events will be held in Zhangjiakou.

The bidding report, which contained 14 themes ranging from Beijing's vision, legacy, engagement, transport, accommodation, finance and sustainability, showcased Beijing's commitment for an athletes-oriented, sustainable, economical Winter Games.

The IOC executive board unanimously agreed Oslo, Almaty and Beijing as candidate cities for the Olympic Winter Games 2022 July 7 last year.

However, Norway's Oslo withdrew its bid due to lack of domestic supports.

The IOC will send its evaluation commission to visit each city between February and March this year. The commission's report, highlighting the risks and opportunities of the candidate cities' projects, will be published prior to the IOC 2022 briefing for its members which will take place in June.

The election of the 2022 host city by the IOC will take place in Kuala Lumpur July 31, this year.
