Mangalore, Dec 13: All tree-lovers can rejoice. At a time it is common to see decades-old trees being sacrificed on the altar of development, here is a bit of refreshing news.

The pipal tree that was shifted three months ago ahead of the road-widening plans from Lady Hill to Durga Mahal in Mannagudda here has now begun to grow leaves.

The process of relocating the tree

The tree was 75 years old at the time of transplantation on September 6 this year. The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) had taken the help of experts Shekhar James from Chennai and Ram Babu from Bangalore for the purpose.

The tree was located near Canara School in Mannagudda. The MCC had marked several trees for felling for the purpose of widening and concreting the road.

Now growing with fresh leaves in a new environment

t the request of Prabha Kudva, director, Gandhi Nagar Park Trust and Dr Ganesh Pai along with others to relocate the trees instead of felling the, the MCC went ahead with the move.

Though several trees were brought down to enable laying of concrete surface on the road, only the pipal tree was transplanted.
