Bangalore, Dec 9: The sex-ratio in Bangalore is highly skewed. There are only 811 girls for every 1000 boys, according to Vimochana, an NGO.

Vimochana director Donna Fernandis, speaking on ‘Female foeticides and other violence against the girl child’ at the SAARC day of the girl child-2006 on Friday said: “We believe technology has brought about a revolution in lifestyle. But people have misused the same technology to destroy female foetus.”

Fernandis further said that misuse of scanning has brought down the female ratio even in urban areas. It is 760 in New Delhi, while it is 811 in Bangalore.

“It is the doctors who are practicing the scanning. There are instances of doctors charging Rs 10,000 for each case in Mandya,” she said.

Speaking on ‘Special problems of differently abled girl children’, Indumati Rao of CBR Network blamed that disabled residential schools for girls have become institute for exploitation. “A poor girl child born with disability will face multiple uncertainty,” she said.

Hamid Manjeshwar, Director of Magu Madhura Kalike who spoke on ‘Gender bias in school curriculum and teacher behaviour’ said: “The 1986 National Education Policy which says the textbooks should not portray gender bias has been violated. Our text books stills portray woman as domestic help and men as prime member of the family.”

He further said that teachers are not instructed about the gender bias in text books during their B Ed or D Ed courses.

Child Right Trust Trustee Dr Padmini, director Vasudeva Sharma and other were present.
