New Delhi, Dec 17 (IANS): All playing equipment that were made of iron will be replaced with those of fibre glass to avoid any safety hazard to children, Delhi development Agency told the Delhi High Court Wednesday.

A division bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice P.S. Teji was told that DDA parks in the city are well maintained and a policy will be formed soon for their maintenance.

In an affidavit filed through advocate Sanjeev Sabharwal, the DDA said: "Earlier there used to be safety hazards when the swings were made of iron which needed regular painting, anti-rust treatment and also had to be replaced from time to time and these were sometimes causing safety problems for children.

"Recently a decision has been taken to replace all such playing equipment with fibre glass play equipment. These are safe with no sharp edges, protrusions, uncovered points and nails etc," it added.

The DDA response came on a suo motu notice court took on the letter of a Supreme Court judge who spoke a bout the deplorable condition of children's parks in the city.

An NGO had also told the court that out of 14,000 municipal parks in the city, only 126 have dedicated playing facilities for children.

Due to the lack of playgrounds, children are inhumanly being pushed to stay indoors with digital devices as their only outlet, NGO Peoples' Action Group said.
