Sharjah: Jashen Dubai, Eagles Hejamady Lift Mayura Cup

Sharjah, Nov 24: Karnataka Sangha Sharjah organized a UAE level Volleyball and Throwball tournament at the Wanderers Sports Club on November 24, 2006.

Enthusiastic and spirited sports persons from different Emirates of the UAE exhibited their talents in both Volleyball and throwball.





A good number of sport-lovers also present to cheer their favorite teams.

Around 8-30 am the Mayura Cup 2007 was inaugurated by releasing the pigeons and balloons. Patron Mark Denis D`Souza, president Ganesh and office-bearers of Karnataka Sangha Sahrjah were present. Uttam Menezes was the compere.

Karnataka Suvarna Mahotsava was also celebrated by the Sangha at noon time. Karnataka State education minister Basavaraj Horatti was the guest of honour.

Sudhir Kumar Shetty of the UAE Exchange, James Mendonca of Mangalore Konkans, Jerome Saldanha of KEL and Dr Pasha Dubai were the other guests on the dais.

Dr Shashikala Gurupur was the guest speaker for the Suvarna Mahotsava celebration.

 






 

 

In a close contest, Jashen Dubai, a popular and heavyweight Throwball team around the UAE, beat their traditional rival Mangalore Konkans Dubai in the finals. Jashan exhibited superb teamwork right from the beginning of the game. Nalini of Jashan was adjudged the best striker of the tournament and Shyamala best all-rounder. Both players played key roles in maintaining the winning tempo for their team.

Mangalore Konkans too played well from match 1 of the tournament. Though,in the final they fought well, they could not surpass the strong defence and striking power of Jashen.



Winning Jashan Team comprised of Bala M Salian (Team manager), Neeta Shetty, Shyamala Poojary, Shrimati Hawaldar, Laxmi B Salian, Nalini Kotian, Surya Rao, Caveri Krishnamurthy, Aquila Lewis, Jessica Sequeira, Sneha Poojary, Jayashree Poojary and Yogita Salian.

On the other hand 'Eagles Hejamady' displayed superb technical game of Volleyball to lift the Mayura Cup of theVolleyball tournament. They beat Coorg Friends in the finals.

The winning Volleyball team comprised of Kote Sayyad Hayaz, Basheer Hassan Kannangar, Abdul Taleel, Ashraf Attur, Raghavendra Ganiga, Rafeeq Ahmed, Mohammed Ashish and Abdul Salam.

Basheer was the player of the tournament and Ashraf the best passer of the tournament

Best Players awards for both Throwball and Volleyball were as follows:

Throwball:

Best defender: Babita Pinto (Mangalore Konkans)
Best Striker: Nalini (Jashen Dubai)
Best All-rounder Shyamala (Jashen Dubai)
Promising Player of the tournament: Colin Quadros (Mangalore Konkans)

Volleyball:
Best Passer: Ashraf (Eagles Hejamady)
Best Striker: Shaukat (Coorg Friends)
Promising Player: Hameed (Coorg Friends)
Player of the tournament: Basheer (Eagles Hejamady)





 

The tournament concluded with a ceremony with prize distribution. President Ganesh Rai, Patron Mark Denis D`Souza, Vatsala Ashok Shetty, Tony (Manager, Wanderers Club), Satish Poojary, and Karnataka Sangha Sharjah members were present.





Though the organizers made best efforts to see the smooth going of the tournament, there were several shortfalls which resulted in inconvienece to the participating teams.

Perhaps since the organizers were hosting such a tournament for the first time, such shortfalls could be excused. But the organizers anywhere have to prepare better with requisite number of experienced referees, good planning, fixtures and handling the players in a professional way.
