Depardieu appears drunk at WWI commemorative event

Brussels, Dec 2 (IANS/EFE): French actor Gerard Depardieu appeared "drunk" at a commemorative event of the First World War over the weekend, the Le Soir daily reported Tuesday.

Depardieu was supposed to make five presentations during the ceremony Sunday at a Brussels cultural centre but two were cancelled after the event organisers found him intoxicated.

The French actor, known for a prolific film career and a scandal-scarred personal life, had difficulty reading the text before him and made jokes about Belgian politics.

Depardieu moved to Belgium last year in a move that, according to the media, was to escape high French taxes.

In an interview with the magazine So Film in September, the actor, who has staged drunken scenes at airports and has been caught driving under the influence, said he drinks out of boredom and can consume up to 14 bottles daily.
