Puttur, Nov 20: A lightning visit to the government hospital here by MLA Shakuntala Shetty took the staff not only by surprise but also caught them wrong-footed on Sunday November 19.

The MLA had visited the hospital after receiving a complaint that a woman who was in her family way was denied treatment at the time of her delivery under the pretext that the concerned doctor was on leave.

The sources said that one Khatiza of Eshwarmangala was admitted to the hospital for delivery.  However, when her labour pain increased, the hospital staff told her that the gynaecologist was on leave and that she had to be taken to Mangalore for her delivery.  No more information was given either to the patient or her family members.

However, the family members shifted her to a private hospital here where shed delivered a baby.  The matter was informed the Shakuntala Shetty had a woman was discharged the hospital while she was having labour pain.  Enraged by this, MLA immediately went to the hospital and took and took the doctors as well as other staff to task.  "In case you cannot treat the patients, close down the hospital.  If these kind of incidents take place in the future, you will have to face strict measures," she warned the hospital staff.
