8 women die after sterilisation surgery, many critical in Chhattisgarh

Bilaspur, Nov 11 (PTI): Eight women died and 52 others have been hospitalised due to botched surgeries at a government-organised sterilisation camp in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur district.

Around 60 women were admitted to different hospitals after they complained of complications following sterilisation surgery at the camp held at a private hospital in Pendari village on outskirts of Bilaspur town on Saturday, Bilaspur Collector Siddharth Komal Pardeshi said today.

"Eight died after their condition deteriorated," Pardeshi told PTI. The deceased were all below 32 years of age.

The condition of at least 10 others was stated to be critical, officials said. The state government has constituted a high-level committee to probe the incident and promised strict action againts the guilty. It annouced Rs 2 lakh compensation to the kin of each of the victims.

On November 8, about 83 women had undergone surgeries at the sterilisation camp held at Nemichand Jain Cancer and Research Centre at Pendari village of Takhatpur region.

All women were residents of nearby villages. The women were discharged after providing medicines on Saturday night but within 24 hours of the surgery, most of them complained of vomiting and abdominal pain following which 60 of them were rushed to different hospitals.

During treatment, two of them -- Janaki Bai (26) and Dipti Yadav (27) -- who were admitted to Bilaspur district hospital passed away yesterday, he said.

Besides, Rekha Nirmalkar, Nembai Suryawanshi, Ranjita, Phool Bai and Chandra Bai, all aged between 22-32 years and admitted to Apollo hospital, died last night after their condition worsened, the Collector said.

The identity of one of the victims is still not known. Preliminary examinations suggested that hypovolemic shock or a septic infection may be the cause of death, Deputy Director, Health Services, Amar Singh said, adding that a detailed autopsy report would reveal the exact reason behind the deaths.

"Its a tragic incident. We have announced a compensation of Rs two lakh each to the family of the deceased," Health and Family Welfare Minister Amar Agrawal told reporters.

An investigation has been ordered into the incident and strict action will be taken against those found guilty, Agrawal said. Earlier too, people have had to suffer due to lax procedures in health camps in Chhattisgarh.

As many as 62 people were left blind in one eye after they underwent surgeries at cataract camps held between 2011-13 in the state.

As per government statistics, a total of 44 people lost vision in an eye after they underwent cataract operation in the camp held at community health centres of Balod on September 29 in 2011,

Four people suffered similar loss of vision in the camp at Durg District hospital on March 27-28, 2012 and 14 people in the camp held at community health centre in Bagbahra town of Mahasamund on December 9-10, 2012.

It is hard to believe.so many women died and still many are critical after Operation of sterelization .so many children, lost their mother ,wives and may be afamilys bread earner. It is looking like pure negligence either or a not professional Person operated.when a professional Dr.operates he will clearly knows about the anatomy.however for me Looks like the operater operated a not fallopian tube but something else. The women got infection .I cant say how they operated ,either by laperoskopie,or classic .My heartfelt sympathy to the Family.whether 2 lacs can help the Family instead of a mother ? is not a answer.

As per latest news, all the 83 operations conducted that day are a failure. United Nations has expressed concern. Whether the persons who operated are doctors or butchers, will be known only after verification. Indeed, very sorry state of affairs.

    Conclusion
    - In Chattisgarh, the doctors who conducted the medical treatment/procedure are a big FEKU.

Parivar members welcome to take note of the matter & ensure that going forward this type of mishap don't happen at least in Chattisgarh (obviously b'coz Chaddiwala is the 3rd term CM of the state)

what is happening in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh (highest number of rapes), Rajasthan etc. 8 women die after sterilisation surgery and many are critical in Chhattisgarh. The other day I read in a prominent national daily - "JAIPUR: Members of a community panchayat in a tribal area of Rajsamand district blackened a 45-year-old woman's face, stripped her naked and paraded her on a donkey's back on Saturday 8th November".India is progressing ! They did not parade her on foot, they paraded her naked on donkey ! The women died in Chhattisgarh are between 22 - 32 years. They must be having small kids otherwise would not have gone for sterilisation. There is no value for human life especially for women. Incredible India !

What a $#it by the Govt. Blood donation camp, eye test camps are ok. But sterilization camp? Why Govt or any one conduct such a camp? Educate people about benefits of having only 2 or 3 kids through various programs, pamplets, media publicity etc. Do not conduct camps. Leave it to the people to decide. No camps required on such things where all citizens of all sects do not participate a like. My view is Govt should not conduct sterilization camps at all.

Typical case of failed administration ! Government wakes up only when such disaster occurs otherwise no one bothers if they would have followed the routine checkup of equipment and medicines and skill of staff periodically and especially before such massive camp event this thing would have been prevented ! Shame on administration of this camp. Population will explode. If people will loose faith in these type of camp.

Oh God.. its height of negligence.. Raman Singh himself is a Doctor and he should make sure, there is a high level enquiry and all the responsible doctors and hospitals should be banned with their registration taken off! ... stop this business of giving 2-3 lakhs for dead etc. it wont serve any purpose once ur loved ones are dead! Hope center intervenes in this.
