Mangalore, Nov 3: The Kannada version of the book "Karnataka: 50 Years of Banking Development" by Syndicate Bank former chairman Dr N K Thingalaya here on Thursday November 2.

The programme was organised by Corporation Bank Chair in Bank Management, and Mangalore University Economics department at the university campus.

Speaking on the occasion, Thingalaya lamented that despite considereable development of the banking sector in the state, an imbalance still exists between the districts. Giving statistics, he explained that only 17 per cent of the rural population has access to banks and only about 28 lac families have received the facilities offered by banks in the entire state.

He blamed the entry of multinational banks in to the country as the cause for increased farmer suicides and lauded the efforts of rural and agricultural banks in eradicating poverty.

The book was released by Corporation Bank general manager B R Bhat. The book has been translated by Dr K Sudhir Raj and Prof N Jayaram Shetty.

Among those present were Justice K S Hegde Institute of Management director Dr M S Moodithaya and Corporation Bank Chair in Bank Management coordinator Prof G V Joshi.
