Sydney, Nov 5 (IANS): Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott Wednesday said volunteers and Aus $24 million in aid will be sent to Sierra Leone to help control Ebola in West Africa.
Abbott said the government's help is to fight the virus which has killed more than 4,950 people, mostly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, Xinhua reported.
He said the government would send Australian volunteers as part of a deal with the British government to manage a hospital.
A majority of workers at a British-controlled 100-bed centre will be Australians.
"I stress, this is a health emergency," he said. "It's not a military emergency," he said.
There have been no confirmed cases of Ebola in Australia.
