Udupi, Nov 2: Nagarjuna Power Project which has been hitting news headlines continuously is once again in limelight now.  The proposed project which recently announced its financial closure received a major jolt when locals led by MP, Yellur gram panchayat president and members forcibly stopped the construction work which was started in a nearby land on Wednesday November 1.

Some construction workers from North Karnataka were involved in a construction work in site owned by the company. The said land had been owned by the late Lakshminarayana Bhat and was later handed over to KIADB by his son.  On this site, the workers were preparing toilet and some other building.    A total of 5 security men too were present during the work.

However, some locals led by MP Manorama Madhwaraj, Yellur GP president Yashwant Shetty, Kaup MLA Lalaji Mendon, ZP member Shashikant Padubidri, TP members Neeta Gururaj, Ramesh Hegde, NJJS president Lakshman Shetty, taluk women's federation president Sheela Shetty and others laid siege to the place and asked the workers to vacate the place.

Seeing the mob, the workers left the place along with their belongings while the security guards stayed back since bags of cement and other construction materials were on the site.  However the protestors demanded that the security men too should vacate the place within 24 hours or face stern action.

Meanwhile, Nagarjuna sources said that the work was going on in a piece of land which has been handed over the company legally by KIADB.  "We have secured all necessary permissions to set up Nagarjuna.  Since the RTC of the said land is under company's name, there is nothing illegal going on as alleged by protestors," said company sources.
