Algiers, Nov 2 (IANS): Algerian football club Entente of Setif won African Champions League title despite a 1-1 draw against Vita Club of RD Congo in the second leg of the final at the Blida Stadium in Kinshasa.
ES Setif won on 3-3 aggregate Saturday night due to the away goal rule after a 2-2 draw in the first leg held in the Congolese capital of Kinshasa last week, reports Xinhua.
The hosts dominated play during the opening minutes of the game as they piled pressure on their rivals, but failed to score amid good organisation of Vita Club's defence line.
Five minutes after the opening of the second half, Sofiane Younes gave the Algerians the lead. But four minutes later, Onga Munganga equalised for Vita Club after a powerful strike outside the vital area.
This goal forced Setif to sit back in their defence, probably defending their away goal from the first leg in Kinshasa.
Vita Club, in return, imposed their play through possessing the ball as long as possible and buiilding quick attacks.
It is the first time an Algerian club has won the African Champions League under its new appellation.
ES Setif won the African Cup of Champions Clubs title in 1987.
ES Setif will be awarded a cash prize of $1.5 million, and will represent Africa in next month's FIFA Club World Cup due in Morocco.
