Bayern, Leverkusen advance; Frankfurt out of German Cup


Berlin, Oct 30 (IANS): Ten-man Bayer Leverkusen avoided an upset against fourth division Magdeburg, winning on penalties, while holders Bayern Munich eliminated Hamburg 3-1 and Borussia Monchengladbach defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 in the German Cup football tournament.

Goalkeeper Bernd Leno stopped three shots in the penalty shoot-out Wednesday to secure a spot in the round of 16 for Leverkusen after the match ended 2-2 after extra-time, reported Xinhua.

They played with 10 men from the 78th-minute following a red card to Son Heung-min.

Leverkusen started the game on a good note as Hakan Calhanoglu scored the opener with a free-kick from 30 meters.

It was a short-lived joy for the topflight club as hosts Magdeburg fought back in the 28th minute. Christoph Siefkes utilised a fast break to restore parity.

Leverkusen went off-track when Son Heung-min was sent off with a straight red card, for violent conduct in the 78th minute.

Magdeburg took a 2-1 lead in the 111th minute through Niklas Brandt's powerful shot from 20 metres.

Papadopoulos equalised five minutes later to force the fourth division team into a dramatic penalty shoot out, where goalkeeper Leno saved three penalties to turn the tide in Leverkusen's favour.

Bayern Munich marched ahead with a 3-1 victory over Hamburg into the last 16.

The defending champions scored two first-half goals on their way to a comfortable win. Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring in the 7th minute. David Alaba doubled the lead with a left-footed shot from 30 meters into the top left corner of the net.

Franck Ribery put the game beyond doubt in the 55th minute before Hamburg reduced the lead through Pierre Michel Lasogga, with five minutes remaining.

Eintracht Frankfurt crashed out of the competition, beaten 1-2 by Borussia Monchengladbach.

Monchengladbach's Thorgan Hazard put his side ahead in the 17th minute before Ibrahima Traore made it 2-0.

Frankfurt reduced the margin as Vaclav Kadlec slotted home from a sharp angle, with one minute remaining.

Elsewhere, 1860 Munich lost 2-5 to Freiburg, courtesy of Admir Mehmedi's second-half hat-trick, Hoffenheim routed FSV Frankfurt 5-1, Wolfsburg crushed Heidenheim 4-1, Leipzig overpowered Aue 3-1 and Braunschweig edged past Wuerzburg 1-0.
