Mother moots donation of brain dead son's organs

Chennai, Sep 12 (IANS): Even in her hour of grief, the mother of a 30-year-old software engineer agreed to donate her brain dead son's organs so that other patients can live longer.

On Sep 7, M. Pakshirajan, employed at Tata Consultancy Services, was riding his two wheeler when he met with a road accident and was critically injured.

"He was the only son of his parents and the youngest in the family. All his five sisters are elder to him," A. Raghuraman, Pakshirajan's brother-in-law, told IANS.

He was admitted to a private hospital here. Despite a brain surgery Pakshirajan's condition did not improve and he was declared brain dead Thursday night.

When doctors explained his condition to the family members, Pakshirajan's mother suggested harvesting her son's organs, which can be donated later.

According to the family members, Pakshirajan decided to cut short his US assignment to be with his old parents following his marriage last year.

All the family members, including his eighth-month pregnant wife and sisters, agreed for the organ donation. His heart, kidney, liver and eyes will be harvested and transplanted later.
