Mangalore This Week : September 3 - 9

By Anisa Fathima - Daijiworld.com Mangalore

Mangalore, Sep 9: The first couple of days of the week brought the shocking news of two separate incidents of suicide, both in Udupi district. While one involved the tragic end of four members of a family including two children, the other heartrending incident involved a mother and her year-old child.

The sad part here is that the parents made their own children a victim of their sufferings. Innocent infants were robbed of their lives even before they learnt to talk. In the first case, subsequent reports stated that the reason might be father's ill
health which he feared would leave his children orphaned.

In the second case, the mother, who had two other elder children, was reported to have been undergoing depression for a year. The actual reasons may be different, yet, the children could have easily been handed over to an NGO or to caretakers or even to orphanages. At least it would have given a child a chance to live.

While people lost lives, the life of one pipal tree was saved when it was transplanted to make way for the widening of the Ladyhill-Mannagudda stretch of road. Mangaloreans had seen an event like this for the very first time, and expectedly, the task, assisted by experts from Chennai, elicited much enthusiasm from the crowd.

The MCC has long been planning to chop down trees for the sake of development. The number of trees to be cut down for the purpose was many more, but after stiff opposition from environmentalists, only 7 trees faced the axe, out of which one was relocated. The point here is, it would be better if the administration, while making way for development, would replace the trees with new saplings. The new technology will help tackle both problems, that of greenery and infrastructure, at the same time. The major hurdle may be the cost involved in relocating each tree.

Thursday September 7 had plenty in store for all.

After much controversy and endless debates, the national song Vande Mataram finally reverberated in the air. The centenary celebrations of the song were held at all colleges and more so at Town Hall here, with hundreds of children, college students and citizens joining in.

It is an irony that a song that has been sung for a hundred years must be debated over whether to sing or not. Religious sentiments of every community needs to be respected, and if the singing Vande Mataram goes against these beliefs, the community should not be accused of being anti-nationalistic. The good part was that on the D-day, the proceedings went on smoothly with people from all communities singing with utmost fervour.

Crime news has always been part and parcel of weekly news reports. This time, a woman was robbed at gunpoint at her house in Hosangadi while the miscreants made away with ornaments worth Rs 87,500 and Rs 2,500 in cash.

The incident again brings to light the issue of safety, especially that of women, in the undivided districts. Though the woman was left unhurt, it must be said that robberies have been on the increase lately and the police needs to step up the night vigils. Stringent patrolling in residential areas and installation of systems that alert the police instantly in times of thefts may help to control the menace, though its complete elimination may never happen.

The week ended with a massive protest by the Muslim organizations in the city demanding resignation and an unconditional apology from chief minister Kumaraswamy for his alleged remarks that Madrassas encouraged terrorism.
The chief minister, being at the helm of affairs of the state, is expected to know better than to make statements that evidently hurt the sentiments of a community. A person who is expected to foster communal harmony in the state should not go on record making such irresponsible and baseless comments. The chief minister's comments are not only undesirable, but are also very political and seem to be aimed at appeasing some of his supporters from other parties as well.
