30.4 lakh new voters for Haryana assembly polls

Chandigarh, Aug 26 (IANS): Nearly 30.4 lakh new voters will be eligible to exercise their franchise in elections to the 90-member Haryana assembly, to be held in October this year, a senior election officer said here.

Nearly 1.62 crore voters are eligible to vote in the elections. This is much higher than the over 1.31 crore voters who cast their franchise in the 2009 assembly polls, Haryana's chief electoral officer (CEO) Shrikant Walgad said here Tuesday.

Among the newly enrolled voters, 15.59 lakh are males and 14.82 lakh females.

"Voters' rolls in Haryana have been updated up to July 31, 2014," Walgad said.

He said that Faridabad district, adjoining national capital New Delhi, had the highest number of voters - over 12.2 lakh. It was followed by Hisar (over 11.48 lakh voters), Bhiwani (over 10.47 lakh voters) and Gurgaon (over 9.87 lakh voters) districts.

Panchkula district, adjoining state capital Chandigarh, has the minimum number of registered voters at nearly 3.49 lakh.
