Arab League condemns killing of American scribe

Cairo, Aug 21 (IANS): The Arab League Thursday condemned the killing of US journalist James Foley by militants of the Islamic State (IS) Sunni extremist group, MENA news agency reported.

"The League condemns this tragic crime that runs counter to the noble Islamic teachings," Deputy Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed ben Helli, told reporters.

The IS posted a video on the internet Wednesday showing the beheading of journalist Foley in revenge for US air strikes in Iraq.

The footage shows a masked man - speaking in English with an accent - killing Foley, who was abducted by armed men in Syria in November 2012.

The IS, formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), established in June an "Islamic caliphate" in the territories under its control in Syria and Iraq. Since then, its members have indulged in sustained persecution of non-Sunnis and other religious communities.
