Check crimes against women: NHRC to Gurgaon police

New Delhi, Aug 21 (IANS): The NHRC has issued notice to the Gurgaon police commissioner over the increasing number of crimes against women.

Taking suo motu cognizance of media reports that indicated a rise in kidnapping, rape and murder of women in the satellite city of Delhi, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) asked for a report within four weeks.

"The Commission has observed that the reports, if true, raise an issue of the state's failure to protect its subjects, particularly the girl child, who were being kidnapped, raped and murdered," NHRC said in a statement Thursday.

"The commissioner has also been asked to submit an action plan for their (women) protection," it added.

The notice comes in the wake of the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl Aug 4.
