Not all sweet....Not all sour...Now a seed....later a flower.....
Thus goes a poem, which aptly brings out a feel of how the last week was for Mangalore and around.

The week began with the sensational arrest of the unauthorised live band at Someshwar-Uchila near Ullal here on Sunday August 13 night. The Ullal police, led by inspector Jayant Shetty, arrested as many as 16 persons, including 6 young women and seized cars, liquor and sound system.

Despite an order by the administration to close the 13 legally-run live band joints in the district till the complied with the new set of requirements and regulations passed by the administration, the live band joint had been running illegally. It was a commendable job by the police, but the news just goes to show that rules and regulations don’t matter much to some people.

Meanwhile, the city had something to look forward to in the economic and development front with the German-based multinational company Larxess (India) Private Limited visiting the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on Saturday August 12 to look in to the investment opportunities in Mangalore SEZ project. The company has plans to establish its unit in 100 acres of land in SEZ and also plans to employ 1,000 employees.

This is another feather on the Mangalore's brimming cap. The city is developing at the speed of light, and the German company will definitely provide a boost to the city's economy.

Quiet contrary to this picture of development was the plight of the National Highway between Baikampady and Suratkal. Irked by the sheer neglect of the NH the residents protested in a novel way by organising a Kambala on the road. Will this novel method open the eyes of the authorities to repair the road?

Tuesday August 15 was a special day in the lives of all Indians as we celebrated the country's sixtieth Independence Day. In Mangalore, the celebrations were marked by a colourful parade at Nehru Maidan by The district police, the district armed reserve and school children.

District minister in-charge B Nagraj Shetty in his address disclosed several schemes and presented a cheque of Rs 50,000 each to the families of two fishermen who lost their lives in the monsoon havoc.

It was a grand celebration attended by crowds of local people. The spirit of Independence showed in the faces of not only the officials but of children too. The gesture by the administration to provide financial assistance (even though Rs 50,000 is not really enough) is worth appreciating.

If August 15 was a day to celebrate, Wednesday August 16 was a day to mourn. The news of the sad demise of Johny Suratkal at the city's Fr Muller Hospital was a shock to the entire Konkani community. The funeral, on Friday August 18 saw a huge gathering of people from all communities who expressed their sorrow and grief.

It was a huge loss to Konkani literature and the name of Johny Suratkal will ever be a shining beacon of the Konkani community.

The week ended with a note of caution. The shocking incident reported here has raised serious concern on safety of women. Although the crime analysis of DK district proved that there was a rise in crime against women, the vulnerability of this section of the population came to the fore when a woman who travelling alone in an auto rickshaw within the city, was looted of her gold jewellery in transit by an unidentified man.

That’s it for this week.
